INDOCHAT VIDEO CALL

working as a product designer at Indochat, where I've been focused on our video call product. In my role, I have been dedicated to crafting an exceptional user experience through iterative design processes.

Over the past months, I've been deeply involved in refining and enhancing our video call feature. This journey has included multiple rounds of wireframing, prototyping, and rigorous testing. My efforts have not only resulted in a comprehensive set of design improvements but have also led to the establishment of a solid design system.

Collaborating closely with our company founder, product managers, and engineers, we've taken this product from its initial stages (0) to a fully functional and engaging solution (1). I'm delighted to share that our efforts, and we are committed to further enriching the video call experience for our growing community.

Problems

The problem at IndoChat lies in the rapid growth of a messaging application, where certain standard chat features have not been fully adopted. One such feature is video calling, which is currently in the shadows of other chat applications like WhatsApp, Line, Telegram, and more.

โš ๏ธ However, IndoChat faces a challenge due to a lack of users and early adopters , which makes it difficult to discern their needs.

Solution

My role has been to research and determine the optimal UX design for video calls in order to address this challenge and enhance the user experience.

๐Ÿ”ฅ This app is now under development and has gained 50K+ user interest.

Process

After understanding the company's needs and expectations, I designed an application based on the IndoChat problem solving frameworks and created a low-fidelity prototype.

I ran user testing with 10 participants and incorporated the feedback to refine the design, resulting in an 80% satisfaction rate. Subsequently, I created a high-fidelity prototype.

User Research

I conducted supervised user research and gathered feedback from user reviews on Play Store and Google Play. I aimed to empathize with the user expectations and needs from well-established MVP apps, despite our current limitations in product feature.

Sketches

The process below begins with my initial ideas wireframes, then moves to mockups, and finally to the high-fidelity prototype. In this simple version, you can see how the I approach solves the user needs.

Compare feature compability

During my work, I undertook user research under close supervision and gathered feedback from user reviews on Play Store and Google Play.

My objective was to comprehensively assess feature compatibility, focusing on aligning user expectations and needs with our existing feature set. This process helped us better understand how our product measures up against competitors and established MVP apps.

Major Design Iterations ๐Ÿ”

In the context of my research at IndoChat, I've led several significant design iterations, and the valuable insights from user testing using the Maze platform played a crucial role in shaping these improvements. This extensive testing involved 20 users who engaged in various tasks, providing essential data for enhancing the user experience.

One of the primary tasks involved accessing the video call feature, followed by executing a sequence of actions, including muting, disabling the camera, and switching the screen. Impressively, 18 out of the 20 users successfully completed this task, demonstrating the effectiveness of the design. The remaining 2 users faced challenges, indicating specific areas for improvement.

Another critical step was guiding users to complete a review and fill out a form. Clear instructions were provided to disable all icons before concluding the task by hanging up. The insights from user testing on Maze helped fine-tune this process, ensuring that users could efficiently navigate and accomplish their goals.

These design iterations were driven by a commitment to creating a product that is user-friendly, efficient, and enjoyable to interact with. By closely analyzing user feedback and adapting the design based on real-world user experiences, we aimed to make IndoChat a more accessible and user-centric application.

๐Ÿ‘‡ Iteration 1. Video Call - without reinvent the wheels

In the process of designing the UX for video calls, I ensured that we didn't reinvent the wheel. Through comprehensive user research and A/B testing, conducted using tools like Maze and Hotjar, I meticulously examined and compared various design options. This approach allowed us to select the most effective and user-friendly solution for daily use, without causing any inconvenience to our users.

๐Ÿ‘‡ Iteration 2. Limitation of freedom

In my UX design for video calls, I adopted an inclusive approach. Instead of segmenting users based on whether they are friends or unknown numbers, I focused on providing a seamless and convenient experience for all. This approach empowers users, giving them a sense of freedom and full control over their video call interactions.

๐Ÿ‘‡ Iteration 3. Make it simple

In my quest to enhance the user experience, I made receiving calls without avatars more efficient and user-friendly. I achieved this by prioritizing a larger display of the caller's name, emphasizing clarity, and simplifying the design with easily understandable icons. This adjustment ensures that users have a more straightforward and clear interaction when receiving calls, making their experience smoother.

๐Ÿ‘‡ Iteration 4. Position

In my design efforts, I focused on creating a user-centric experience for the majority of users who favor right-handed usage. To achieve this, I introduced a double-view screen for video calls, making it more accessible by thumbs and providing a comfortable reach for tapping actions. This adjustment ensures that the video call interface is intuitively designed for users, making it approachable and user-friendly.

What I Learned

Throughout my time working at IndoChat, I've realized the significance of early user feedback collection. In this project, we initiated feedback collection a few weeks after the product's launch, which offered valuable firsthand insights to inform our design decisions
